The BOX mission:
To provide a place where people can experience artistic and educational programs in innovative ways. To bring people from diverse cultural backgrounds and experiences together as artists, audiences and volunteers. To work collaboratively with artistic, educational, and cultural organizations in and beyond our community. To develop artistic and educational programs that integrate a variety of art forms in order to encourage new cultural experiences both for the audience and the artists.
For the past four years, we have been running The BOX, an empty bank reclaimed as an informal cultural space. This pilot programme has had a transformative effect on Portstewart and contributed to the establishment of a new cultural identity for the town, bringing substantial economic and social benefits.
So far in the BOX we’ve had a participatory art installation (Colour the World), a multimedia exhibition (In Another’s Shoes), theatre (The Complete Olympic Games), a multicultural festival (CultureBOX), two youth theatre projects, displays by karate, dance and craft experts, numerous workshops, open rehearsals for several UK/Ireland professional touring productions, a Sunday night ‘Live Lounge’, where young people play the music they like and talk about what matters to them, and live episodes of Desert Island Discs, where people share stories and music using the radio show format.
We have a 12 seater cinema and in our large studio style space we have floor to ceiling windows facing out onto the street. In our space we have theatrical sound and lighting equipment and also the means to play sound outside. Our space is wonderful for innovative ways of performing poetry, story-telling, theatre, music, and games. Activities which people can casually drop in to seem to work best – events could be created around model making, design, gardening, games, knitting, sewing or scrabble…….
With thanks to funding from Esmée Fairbairn Foundation, we are now extending this programme across Northern Ireland.
